Southwestern Onion Rings

1 large sweet onion
1 ½ cups buttermilk
1 egg
1 ½ Tbsp water
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chili powder
½ tsp cayenne pepper
½ tsp sugar
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp ground cumin

Slice onion; separate into rings. Place in bowl; cover with buttermilk and soak for 30 minutes, stirring twice. In another bowl, beat eggs and water. In a shallow dish, cayenne, sugar, garlic powder and cumin. Drain onion rings, dip in egg mixture, coat with flour mixture, and fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
